The Membrane Electrolysis Plant (MEP) at Rotterdam in the Netherlands is one of the largest, most modern and safest chlorine plants in the world and plays a central role within the chlorine cluster in the Rotterdam Botlek area. As a BRZO site, the safety and reliability of our processes are of utmost importance.

Your mission within the Process Technology team will be to raise these safety standards even higher. As such, you will have the scope and freedom to initiate improvement proposals and bring your unit to the next level.

The role and its responsibilities

This is a high profile role in which you act as a functional expert in the area of process technology, responsible for a wide range of process safety and operational activities.

Thus you are co-responsible for the operational year plan and for safeguarding the mid- to long-term performance of the plant. You also take the lead in improvement projects and carry out investigations and trials within (and sometimes outside of) your own unit(s), in collaboration with development engineers. To support you, AkzoNobel offers several high quality courses and training programs. This will enable you to obtain both specialized knowledge and experience as you grow towards a managerial position.

You spread your expertise across a number of activity areas:

Functional excellence

You secure compliance with applicable AkzoNobel policies, guidelines, processes, methodologies, working methods and systems including stage gate project management tools. In doing so you actively support equipment improvement initiatives with technical knowledge and participate in and execute root cause problem solving in order to facilitate in the development of technical solutions.

Knowledge development and management

You are eager to learn about your units and spread your knowledge further in the organization to lift the general knowledge of everyone in the organization. Thus you deliver trainings, create P&IDs and FLD and operating manuals, and give presentations to create support for changes in the MEP-organization. You are alert for possible constraints that may influence the change process. Further, you evaluate production and efficiency data and generate reports that identify production performance improvement opportunities.

Safety leadership

You provide safety leadership by actively propagating our safety culture and by engaging in constructive (safety) dialogue with peers and the shop floor. You also ensure strict compliance and adherence to local laws and regulations and AkzoNobel’s Life Saving rules. In doing so you improve safety performance and safeguard the license to operate by identifying hazards and taking appropriate actions, monitoring the follow up on incidents, and learning from incidents.

Capex

You initiate relevant Capex projects designed to improve plant performance, providing expert know-how and input to the scoping and basic engineering of projects.

Relation Management

You build and maintain a close collaboration with HSE and Integrated Supply Chain networks within AkzoNobel and you participate in an operations/technology community in the region/BU.

Candidate profile

To apply for this position you must possess all the following attributes:

  • Bachelor or Master, preferably in Process-, Chemical-, or Physical Technology, or Mechanical Engineering;
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the chemical industry, preferably in operational support and/or projects;
  • Knowledge of chemical production processes and relevant HSE demands;
  • Good analytical skills and knowledge of safety studies (HazOp, LOPA, SIL);
  • Strong communication, report-writing and presentational skills including fluent written and spoken English, Dutch and preferably German.
