Job Description

South Asia Programme Intern

Minority Rights Group International is seeking an intern to support the programme ‘Protecting and promoting freedom of religion or belief in South Asia’. In the context of majoritarian nationalisms and discrimination faced by religious minorities in South Asia, this programme aims to promote and protect freedom of religion or belief by supporting local human rights defenders in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and India. This role will therefore enable you to gain valuable insight into issues related to minority communities in South Asia and, more broadly, into the work of an international NGO working with some of the world’s most marginalised communities.

As an intern on this programme, you will work primarily with MRG’s South Asia Programme Officer based in the region. The role will involve providing general support to MRG’s work in South Asia, with responsibility for a variety of tasks involving both internal and external stakeholders. Some of the more common tasks would include:

  • Undertaking desk and primary research on issues related to the programme, as well as media monitoring
  • Liaising with partner organisations based in the programme countries
  • Contributing to reviewing human rights reports submitted by activists in the region, and putting together multimedia publications based on these reports
  • Assisting with project implementation and monitoring by providing administrative and logistical support (for example, helping to organise trainings and conferences, processing financial reports, keeping track of outputs)
  • Communicating, working with, and providing support to relevant MRG colleagues as needed (including the Finance Department and the Programme Assistant based in London)
  • Contributing to designing new and follow up work in the region through conducting research, drafting lengthy documents, or other relevant tasks

We endeavour to make this a valuable and fulfilling experience for selected candidate, and therefore will aim to work together with the intern to arrange tasks that match their interests and skill set as best as possible.

Essential requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s or Masters’ degree in relevant areas studies, International Relations, Political Science, Human Rights, Religious Studies, or a related subject
  • An understanding of regional issues in South Asia, and the situation of minorities in at least one of the programme countries
  • An understanding and commitment to learning about human and minority rights, and intersectional discrimination faced by minorities in South Asia
  • Project or research experience with an NGO, or similar
  • Experience organising events, such as trainings, seminars, and conferences
  • Excellent communication skills and, ideally, experience of working with individuals or communities in the region
  • Strong organisational skills, and the ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines
  • Excellent written and spoken English

Desirable

  • A working knowledge of any relevant languages spoken in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and/or India

Please note that this internship will be be based primarily out of MRG’s London office. We would like the selected intern to be able to commit to at least 2-3 days per week for a duration of 3 months with the possibility of extension.

Candidates will need to have permission to work in the UK in order to take on this role.

Please note that, unfortunately, due to limited resources this is an unpaid internship. MRG covers travel expenses (up to £8) and lunch (up to £6) daily in the case you work from MRG’s London office.

How to Apply

Interested candidates are invited to submit a CV and cover letter to southasia@mrgmail.org byWednesday 2 March at 11.59 PM GMT. Please include ‘South Asia Programme Intern’ in the subject of your email. Please note that candidates invited for interview will be notified by the end of the day on Friday 4 March.
