Full-Time Postdoc in the Department of Pathology

Leiden University Medical Center – Posted by admin Leiden, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands

Job Description

Postdoc in the Department of Pathology

The position

As Postdoc in the Department of Pathology, you will work in the Molecular Tumor Genetics group on the research program Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors. The program focusses on elucidating the molecular events underlying sarcoma development and progression in order to establish improved diagnosis, prognosis and treatment for patients with bone and soft tissue tumours. As a postdoc you will be working on one of the projects within the recently granted VICI-program “sarcoma modelling towards patient specific treatment” under direct supervision of Prof. Dr. J.V.M.G. Bovée.

The project

Sarcomas are rare cancers arising in soft tissue and bone. They are difficult to diagnose and treat, with 38-48% mortality for this often young age group. Although it is now generally accepted that molecular changes in cancer opens avenues for personalized medicine, representative model systems for sarcomas are scarce. This VICI program aims to generate representative sarcoma models for gene manipulation and preclinical testing of existing drugs. As a postdoc you will be involved in the development of 3D “micro-sarcs” (ex-vivo cultured tumor tissue) that will be generated from patient tissue of osteosarcoma, cartilaginous and vascular tumours. You will be responsible for the development of a novel pipeline in which multiple “micro-sarcs” can be analysed simultaneously using histology, immunohistochemistry and imaging mass spectrometry. These “micro-sarc”-arrays will subsequently be used for drug testing and to identify biomarkers that predict response.

Your profile

You have obtained a PhD in a biomedical field (or expect to shortly) and have experience in cell biological techniques, preferably in the field of oncology. You should possess good technical skills and good writing and communication skills, including a fluency in English. You must be performance driven, structured and accurate.
