Terre des hommes Greece recruits a Non-Formal Education Team Leader for its project in Epirus Region (Greek national contract).

Context:

In 2015 alone 856,723 refugees and migrants arrived in Greece from Turkey through the Aegean Sea flying war and life threatening situation. Arrivals continued in 2016 with 162,604 new arrivals registered in in Greece by 22/08/2016. The situation evolved dramatically following the closure of the Western Balkans Route and the EU-Turkey agreement on 20/03/2016. This ended the mass arrival pattern observed in 2015 and early 2016 and led to thousands of refugees not being able to continue their journey towards their planned destination.

In response to this protracted crisis, the ECHO funded project seeks to deliver integrated services and support to children in Epirus region through provisions of non-formal education for all refugee children, youth and adults and targeted child protection services to the most vulnerable children and caregivers.

General description of the position:

The main purpose of the position is to provide managerial and technical oversight for the effective implementation of the non-formal education component of the project targeting Asylum seekers living in refugee camps and in urban settings in the Epirus Region of Greece.

Key responsibilities:

  • Supervision of the non-formal education activities

o Support the Education Supervisor in the identification, set-up and equipment of safe learning spaces inside and outside the camps

o Under the guidance of the Education Supervisor and in collaboration with the University of Ioannina design a weekly time-table of classes to be revised according to the evolving needs of the target beneficiaries

o With the Education Supervisor ensure the establishment and implementation of work plans, setting clear targets and activity plans per project’s sites

o Support the University of Ioannina in planning and organizing initial training for teachers and students on CP key concepts ensuring that the Protection Supervisor is involved

o Supervise and mentor field teams composed of librarians, animators and translators in charge of provisions of non-formal education and toy libraries.

o Support the University of Ioannina in the coordination of its teachers and students in charge of the delivering non-formal education curricula

o Liaise with humanitarian actors, authorities and community in and outside the camps to increase education service provision, disseminate information to ensure participation of children in non-formal education

o Supervise the learning spaces to ensure that they are adequately equipped and furnished and that learning environments are established where children are physically, psychologically, socially, and culturally secured

o Ensure attendance is taken by teachers, and that they collect data systematically. Check data and ensure that it is logically presented to the Education Supervisor

o Cross check field documentation, ensuring information is being gathered and recorded properly.

o Prepare inputs to reports and compile project reports according to the project document (monthly reports, quarterly reports, donor reports, final report)

o Participate in field assessment whenever requested by the line manager

o Any other duty as assigned by the line manager

  • Child Protection

o Establish regular exchanges with the CP and CM colleagues to ensure that children in need of protection are timely identified and adequately supported

o Liaise with CP team in order to ensure that child protection is mainstreamed into education and that a child protection mentality is built around the project

o Report serious cases of abuse on children identified by the project team to the CP focal point of Tdh. Strict confidentiality must be respected.

  • RH management

o Identify needs and design capacity building plan for staffers under her/his supervision coordinating with implementing partners and Tdh CP responsible person

o Manage staff attendances, leaves and provide monthly attendance sheets to the line manager to facilitate payroll process

o Ensure regular feedback to the staff under her/his responsibility and appraisal process when needed and support disciplinary measures application if needed

  • Coordination and representation

o Conduct regular field visits to project’s locations and organise regular meetings with the staff and with project partners

o Work in close collaboration with the University of Ioannina and other teachers on site

o Coordinate with other Tdh sectors to ensure implementation of standardized activities and with other departments (programme and support) of Tdh in Greece as necessary.

o Represent Tdh in fora and meetings held at location or regional level in her/his field of expertise

o Develop a network to facilitate the project acceptance and stake holder’s contribution and ownership.

  • Other

o Agree to comply with Tdh Code of Conduct and ensures Child Safeguarding standards are upheld. Adhere to and ensure the team under her/his responsibility follows Tdh administrative and logistical regulations and procedures.

Job requirements:

  • Knowledge:

Professional diploma or University degree in pedagogy, education, or any related field

At least 2 years’ experience working in the education sector, either in public or private educational institutions

Basic IT knowledge (Microsoft Office, Internet)

Previous experience in emergency response is appreciated

Knowledge of key child protection issues and best practices

Knowledge of child protection system in Greece

  • Skills:

This position requires the control of basic personnel, social and leadership skills, as well as technical, organizational and methodological competences.

Required qualities: proactive, autonomous, rigorous, organized, good communication and interpersonal skills.

To have a valid driving license is an asset.

  • Languages:

Fluent in English and Greek

Knowledge of Arabic or Farsi is an asset.
