Group Leader/Assistant Professor: Nanophotonics


The research Institute AMOLF (Amsterdam, the Netherlands) is looking for a tenure-track group leader in the field of Nanophotonics, with emphasis on the fundamental physics aspects of optical interactions at the nanoscale. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the interaction of light with light, motion spin and excitons across the UV to IR range, nonlinear photonics, metamaterials, topological transport, quantum information processing, quantum optics and quantum many-body physics with light, sensing and novel imaging principles, ultrafast nano-optics and hybrid systems.

The candidate’s independent research group will be part of the Center for Nanophotonics at AMOLF. This Center comprises six groups that work in a strongly collaborative atmosphere and that cover fundamental and application-driven science. The Center has strong connections to high-tech industry in photonics and nanotechnology, and is active in fields ranging from plasmonics, metamaterials, and cavity optomechanics to photovoltaic energy conversion, and novel microscopy concepts. The institute houses a state-of-the-art cleanroom for nano-fabrication and characterization. We offer an intellectually stimulating environment, with ample opportunities for collaborations with other existing AMOLF research groups, particularly also including the Designer Matter and Physics of Living Matter groups at AMOLF.

Job description

The group leader position is equivalent to that of tenure-track assistant professor. The group leader will be offered a start-up package for equipment and positions for PhD students or post-docs to build up his/her own lab. The group leader will work closely together with the AMOLF technical support staff to enable a rapid development of the group’s laboratory and to expedite research results.

The group leader:

  • Initiates a novel research programme in an aspect of Nanophotonics;
  • Develops novel methods of research;
  • Acquires national and international research grants to expand his/her group;
  • Coaches, mentors and supervises the group members and coordinates the implementation of the projects within the group;
  • Is responsible for the budget, the planning and the quality of the projects within the group;
  • Contributes actively to the positioning of the field both nationally and internationally;
  • Realizes publications in leading international journals;
  • Communicates his/her work in talks and lectures within and outside the Netherlands;
  • Fosters a network of external national and international relations.


AMOLF is a national Dutch research institute that studies the fundamental physics and design principles of natural and man-made complex and functional matter, with focus on nanophotonics, photovoltaics, designer matter and living matter. The Institute contributes to knowledge transfer to industry and society and trains talented young researchers. AMOLF is located at Science Park Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in close proximity of the University of Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. AMOLF engages approximately 140 scientists and 70 support staff. The institute houses a cleanroom for fabrication of nanophotonic structures, and state of the art facilities for material characterization, microscopy, and (ultrafast) spectroscopy.
